"Please tell me you're joking."
Carlton was proud of his choice of words. Given the situation, he'd almost gone with something along the lines of 'what is wrong with you?', 'are you beyond insane?', or the very close runner-up, 'Y'know, there's a guy I've been investigating who forges passports to get criminals out of the country, would you like his information?'
No, what he said showed restraint-- anyway, it probably wasn't too bright to give Shawn an out. He wanted the man within arms reach, just in case.
Carlton's chair creaked as Shawn shifted his weight on the detectives lap, leaning dangerously closer, a smirk playing across scruffy face. Smirk, class: B-1.3a; non-lethal, standard but a bit more cute than Smirk B-1.1, and more mischievous than B-1.2, with an added flair of schadenfreuden joy at Carlton's expense. Dangerous.
The detective tried again. “Tell me. You are. Joking.”
“I, myself, was thinking a winter wedding would be nice.”
“How many people have you told?” Carlton fought every fiber in his body telling him to scream and flail and run. It didn't hurt that there was a man putting his full weight on his lap still, a hand gently wrapped around the back of his neck. All calculated for this very reason, Carlton was sure. Manipulative little jerk.
“You think they do wedding registry's at Game-World? I'll look into it.”
“I'll look into Whitaker's Gun Shop for you, too.” Shawn said before swooping in for a quick kiss. It sufficiently distracted Carlton's mind for a moment, long enough for him to forget Shawn's insanity and pull him in for a longer kiss-- work protocol be damned. This is why he had his own office, after all.
Shawn pulled back slightly, keeping his forehead touched against Carlton's. Smirk, class: A-3; sexy, truly happy. “You'll make a beautiful blushing bride,” Shawn said as he jumped off the detective's lap and made for the door.
Carlton, caught off guard for not the first time with this man, stammered “Who said I'd be the bride?”
Shawn, not bothering to respond, opened the door and began to make his way through the busy police station. Carlton, not willing to drop the conversation so quickly, jumped up and stood in his doorway.
“Next time you decide to tell everyone we're engaged, I want to be the first to know!” The station floor screeched to a halt, all eyes on Carlton. Through the ocean of silence, a voice wafted from down the halls.
“April Fools, Lassie, my love!”
